In this recent commercial for Cadillac, Kate Walsh (AKA Dr. Addison Montgomery-Shepherd) delivers one of the best lines I've heard in a while: "The real question is, when you turn your car on, does it return the favor?"
I really like the line. I think it's delivered impeccably and fits perfectly in the spot. But a coworker of mine, also a copywriter, thinks it's lame (and he's a GUY!).
What are your thoughts? Does the line turn you on or off?
I'm a girl, clearly, and I love the line. Kate delivers it perfectly. The spot and its counterparts with Kate are geared toward women, so who cares how corny a guy thinks it is. What do the ladies out there think?
There's something that's turning me off about this ad. I can't quite pinpoint it though. Maybe it's just that after a while, all car ads seem the same to me. (or I should say all car ads geared towards women have the same look / feel)
However, once again BMW's Mini print ads have turned me on. Someone there knows what they are doing (sorry if you've never seen their print ads but I just saw a new one in a magazine last night).
Is it true that no creative is really "original"? I mean, ideas are always inspired by something else, right? So I guess it's possible that someone could come up with an "original" line that someone else has already thought up, yes?
I'm also a copywriter, and it bugs the hell out of me. You have an ad that insinuates that the woman knows a heck of a lot about her car. And then, at the very end, she uses a term that no respectable car lover would. You just don't ever 'turn on your car'.
I love her voice, I love the premise, I hate the wording of the line.

In an Ad Age post, some guy wrote:
"Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the identical line Mullen used to sell lighbulbs a few years back? It was in CA and One Show."

Who cares what we think? The real question is, What does George the Carpenter think? George, George, are you out there, George?

How does a lightbulb turn you on? A car I get...
This girl thinks the Cadillac line is clever and well delivered. But maybe that's because I wish I was in her shoes. I doubt a man would?

I like that her monologue switches from serious to playful to pay off the spot. How would you change the line?
